GRAS, or “Generally Recognized as Safe,” is a regulatory designation established by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for substances intentionally added to food. This status indicates that the substance is considered safe by qualified scientific experts under the conditions of its intended use, based on either a long history of common use in food or on publicly available scientific evidence.
Unlike other food additives, substances that meet GRAS criteria do not require formal premarket approval by the FDA. Instead, their safety has been generally acknowledged by experts in the field, and as such, they are exempt from the usual food additive tolerance and approval requirements.
