RFID RC522 does not detect cards

I have a M5Stack with RC522, and if I run the example at https://github.com/m5stack/M5-ProductExampleCodes/tree/master/Unit/RFID/Arduino/RFID I get zero response.
I've tried swiping bank cards, library books with RFID, access cards, but nothing happens. What kind of RFID token should it react on, so assure it's working and not broken?

The readers works with 13.56Mhz tags and cards that support ISO14443A, MIFARE and NTAG.
I have mine reading and writing to cheep blank cards I found on ebay and programmed through the UIFlow environment.
